Principality Notice
PN 015/01: Unaffiliated web sites
1 November 2001
During the Principality's years as a sovereign State [as with many emerging
States] there have been attempts to overthrow the founding government; some
of these were by force. The State has successfully fought and defeated all
insurrectionists, some of whom remain convinced that they represent "the
Government of Sealand in exile'. This is of course not only a fiction but
something of a nonsense.
The Principality notes that some of these sites [often with the words
'Principality of Sealand' or 'Sealand'] continue to be present on the Internet
and persist in offering for sale documents, information, or other artefacts
purporting to have been officially issued by Sealand. This is of course also
a fiction, and the Principality has been actively working with the international community, its Interpol representatives, and
others to bring to justice those concerned with these fraudulent activities.
Arising from some of this historical background are also to be found other
sites, some referring to Sealand's designation as 'Rough Tower' [or 'Roughs
Tower' or even 'Rough's Tower'], the original name(s) of the Island Fort when
it was established and occupied by the United Kingdom as a part of its
national defences during the Second World War. Although these historical
designations became inappropriate following the abandonment by the UK of
its wartime fortifications which were located in International waters
some 55 years ago and by Sealand's subsequent declaration of independence
nearly 35 years ago, there remain those who choose to ignore this reality.
The Principality regrets any confusion which may arise due to this persistent
reference to events and situations of the past [which are now perhaps less
relevant to today's international community than even the international
changes following the end of the Cold War] but notes that the rights of
all men to speak freely, whether of substance or imagination, are
enshrined within its Constitution.
Moreover, the Principality welcomes mature and informed debate relating to
any issues seen to be reasonable and relevant to the International Community
of States, and seeks to take an active and constructive part in such matters.
